CMPD Launches Two New Online Services

Two new service features have been added to CMPD's Website, cmpd.org. Starting September 25th, victims of crime will be able to get a free copy of their crime report online. And, the department will start logging significant incidents so people can get basic information about major public safety issues. Both services can be found under the "E-Policing" section of the home page and each is designed to increase convenience and accessibility.

Crime Reports
Victims of crime will be able to get a free copy of their crime report by entering both the complaint (report) number and their name. Due to the nature of certain crimes, however, some reports will only be available in person, including sexual assaults, domestic violence, suicides and vice and narcotics cases. These and all other public reports can be obtained from CMPD's Records Division at either of the following locations: CMPD Headquarters at 601 East Trade Street and the West Service Area at 4150 Wilkinson Blvd. This service is provided under contract with CMPD by www.PoliceReports.US. To go directly to CMPD's Crime Report Database, click here.

Significant Event Log
This new feature will provide a record of preliminary reports of public safety incidents, such as significant crimes, missing persons and arrests, over a 24-hour period. Necessarily brief because we will be posting the information as close to real time as information is available, the Log will have a description of the incident and suspect information if we have it. This Log, combined with the 911 Calls For Service feature on the site, provides greater transparency to the type and amount of information available to citizens about events taking place in the community.

Note: Information in the Log is based on preliminary field reports. Additional investigation often results in changes these reports. More definitive information is contained in the Crime Report for the particular incident.

Panhandling

Eye Magazine recently ran this article on panhandling. The bottom line is you should not give money or encourage these people. Be polite, but be firm. It is illegal to panhandle within twenty feet of an ATM, at an outdoor cafe or a bank. Also, the law prohibits panhandlers from asking for money after dark. The police do enforce this city ordinance and arrests have been up.
Panhandling begs the question: Give?

During the day, Jeff Baker waits at intersections throughout the city, holding a cardboard sign that asks for money. At night, he sleeps in the woods near Johnson C. Smith University.

Throughout the center city, people face a dilemma as they encounter Baker and other panhandlers: Should I give?

No, say homeless advocates and the police.

Most panhandlers are struggling with substance-abuse addictions, and the money you give may be used for drugs or alcohol, said Liz Clasen, associate executive director of the Urban Ministry Center on College Street, just outside the Interstate 277 loop.

Car break-in Suspect Caught

CMPD PO Rowland reports that they arrested a subject breaking in a car one recent evening at about 6:20 pm near the 700 block of North Church Street. One of the residents of a nearby building saw it, called CMPD and positively identified the subject.

The suspect name is identified as Thomas Ulysses Williams.

Click here for the link to the Inmate Inquiry page. Enter 093631 as the PID #.

PO Rowland said, “This is a great of example of team work and what can happen when the citizens get involved.”

This is how we do it, folks!

Alleged Sexual Assailant Arrested

This past Saturday morning, a man allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in front of the Chapel Watch condominiums on Church St. and then assaulted another woman immediately afterwards on 8th Street. The police were immediately summoned to the scene and the man, Christopher Tabb, was caught and thrown in jail. Great work by the Central Division CMPD 1st shift in making the arrest and getting this man behind bars. Mr. Tabb is currently being held on bond with 4 misdemeanor counts and a felony charge of 2nd degree rape by force.

The Jail website shows that he is still in jail under a $37,000 secured bond. Chances are he will not be able to make that as it would cost at least $3700 in bondsman's fees, plus the collateral. He has his First appearance Tuesday 10-2 and his Bond Hearing will be set then. The judge is highly unlikely to change his bond Tuesday. The Bond Hearing will be attended by FOFW reps to make FOFW's input known. In reviewing unofficial sources, it appears that someone with a strikingly similar name, demographics and DOB has priors convictions for Misdemeanor Trespass, Larceny (twice), Public masturbation, Indecent Exposure (twice, the most recent being last month), and was on probation for Felony Common Law Robbery. He was violated on his probation some time ago and did time in prison (which takes him off probation supervision) and was released this past May. Given this record, judges are not likely to be lowering his bond anytime soon.
